Our involvement in this programme was prompted by the many violent student demonstrations at the local university and other tertiary institutions. We worked with the Students Representative Councils in nonviolent activism. We were then asked to train the National Student leadership but unfortunately due to lack of resources we were unable to do that, in fact we were not even able to continue with the local initiative.
We have also been training youth groups in the church and without in Peacebuilding skills as well. Young people are the tools used by power seekers to either keep or attain it. In the political violence church youths have also been actively involved as perpetrators. In the 2000/ 2002 electoral violence members of the Baptist youth group in Gokwe were sadly an integral part of the violence machinery there. They even threatened members of the same church group who were in the cities, and most never visited their rural homes during this time for fear of being beaten up by their fellow Christian brothers and sisters.
