What We Do
What is GTH’s approach?
GTH’s approach to peacebuilding is interdenominational (working across different persuasions), long-term (providing support across decades), locally grounded (drawing upon local knowledge of problem solving), and centred on the logic of non-violence. At the same time, GTH accounts for the intrinsic links between peacebuilding, trauma processing and development, promoting the former without losing sight of the latter.

Helping victims of violence, their families and communities, to deal with traumas
Women empowerment
Unearthing female peacebuilding capacities, and promoting women participation in community affairs.
Youth peacebuilding activities
Using sports, peace clubs and citizen journalism assist youth to find nonviolent and creative means to deal with their conflicts.
Church and traditional leaders
Encouraging constructive involvement of church leaders within their communities, and bridging gaps to traditional leadership structures
Conflict resolution skills
Equipping local key actors with the skills to constructively resolve conflict in their communities, and assist others in doing so.
Research
Collecting insights from local peacebuilding processes and feeding them into symposia and debates to inform discussions on matters of peace and conflict.
What is the context on the ground?
GTH is operating in a dynamic context, characterized by multiple challenges. In Matabeleland, many communities face a reality of polarization (e.g. along tribal, political and/or faith lines), and limited access to services and opportunities (including food, water, health care, education, employment). Animosities related to past incidents of violence linger below the surface and often remain unaddressed. In many communities, there is a tendency of resorting to violence as the main tool to settle differences.
What is up next?
In view of this strained environment, GTH acknowledges the importance of assisting communities in reversing a culture of violence on the one hand, and creating – and sustaining – a culture of peace on the other hand.
Direct community work
GTH will further consolidate and expand its community work, equipping key actors with the skills necessary to resolve conflict constructively.
Linkages
GTH will explore linkages with national reconciliation and dialogue initiatives as to feed in local perspectives on matters of peace and conflict.
Organisational Capacities
GTH seeks to invest more strongly in building internal capacities to optimize management processes, drive learning, and enhance GTH’s ability to swiftly adapt its strategy and approaches to changing conditions.
